    Default Catskill Boxing Gym

Is the Catskill Boxing Gym still open? And does Kevin Rooney still train there? I would love to make a trip over to Catskill to witness the man who once made Tyson for who he was.

Kevin Rooney still trains and he's trying to find another Mike Tyson...all the fighters he trains are stocky and similar to Mike in stature. His most recent fighters are Leonard Pierre and Thomas Hayes. Both have lost and haven't fought up to potential.

Rooney and the style Cus used only works for certain kinds of fighters and you have to be brought up with it because it's difficult to learn which is my reasoning why he doesn't have many brand name fighters training with him.....that and I seem to recall him having issues with alcohol.

I would love to see Rooney do well he seems like a nice guy and it would be great for him to carry on a legacy like Cus did.

Thank you for your reply Lyle.

I strongly agree with Cus and Kevin's style of training. The way they taught Tyson to fight with the peekaboo stance was ingenius. Perhaps it is very hard to find a quality boxer that can fight in the peekaboo.

I should try get yourself a new york phone book or something..Lol

It seems like the least long shot type of approach..

Otherwise you never really know whats gona happen anyway..

You might find out the guy does his laundry ona wednesday so you go to his laundromat and he might get the hump with you..Lol

One thing that might be good is to get into doing interviews for boxing websites.. There must be someone there that can arrange for you to contact him and if he so pleases do an interview face to face rather then over the phone.. hell even try this one.. i know for a fact the site has a tonne of contacts in the boxing world..

Course its your phone bill.. your money paying for a plane ticket or petrol to go there.. But its your thing you wana do and they'll oblige with info to help out the site and get an interview im sure..

the catskill boxing gym is stillopen, however i think they go under the name of the Cus D'Amato Boxing Gym. The Official Cus D'Amato's Gym

I know that kevin rooney is training there, but they seem to have a few really good trainers.

Im keeping an eye to see what going to happen there. seem some good potential

I am a Tyson fan and always thought he stayed away from weights as it would slow him down. I know later he used them after Prison and was never the same, too much musclebound.

Hey, guys. I'm new to the site, but I've been a boxing fan all my life. I would really like to get into boxing seriously. I live in the Bronx, NY (about1 1/2 - 2 hours from Catskill, NY) and I was wondering if it's worth driving up that far north for a boxing gym? I can't afford any gyms around here, I have no job, I'm just a student. I want to get involved this summer, so I am trying to make a fast decision. Any help would be appreciated! How's the gym like up there by the way?
