Sadie and Bessie were born in 1889 and 1891, respectively, and their life stories are enthralling as they teach history from a personal perspective, from what the Jim Crow laws felt like to life in the core of the Harlem Renaissance, socializing with the likes of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. The Delaney sisters' lives were full of hard-earned achievements and remarkable firsts--Sadie graduated from Pratt and became the first African American domestic science teacher in New York, and Bessie graduated from Columbia to become New York City's second black female dentist. More beguiling than the monumental accomplishments of their lives are the everyday stories they share--their love for their family, the fear awakened by a photograph of a lynching, the way they honor and celebrate their father's birthday every year with his favorite meal even 70 years after his death, the way they miss their mother even at the age of 104--and they might just be onto something when they argue that people over 100 shouldn't have to pay taxes any more. While clearly somewhat younger than 101 and 104, Carroll and Dee give wonderful performances.
